Mexico travel: A guide to visiting the Maya ruins in the Riviera Maya

The Maya ruin sites within a one- to two-hour drive from Riviera Maya include Chichén Itzá, Tulum, Cobá and Muyil.

Here's a rundown:

Chichén Itzá: Arrive early to avoid large crowds. Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday; admission, $10; video camera fee is $3.50; tour guide costs $50-$60 per group. Note: El Castillo pyramid can no longer be climbed. There is likely to be a Dec. 21 event at Chichén Itzá; keep checking www.rivieramaya.com for an announcement, details.

Cobá: Open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily; admission, $4. Rent a bike or a bicycle taxi for $3-$5, or walk 1.2 miles on flat ground to various ruins, including Nohoch Mul pyramid, which can be climbed. Paths can be tricky to follow; hire a guide ($50 for group).

Tulum Archeological Zone: Tulum is interesting for its stunning overlook of the Caribbean, its sea wall and its temple, El Castillo. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission, $5.
Muyil: Only a few excavated ruins, but with a guided tour, visit a temple across a lagoon in Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. Birding, fly fishing, kayaking. Tours Monday-Saturday. www.siankaantours.org; e-mail info@siankaantours.org.


Mexico To Host World Amateur Team Championships In 2016

Cancun, Mexico, has been selected as the site of the 2016 World Amateur Team Championships, the International Golf Federation (IGF) announced at its Biennial Meeting.

The courses of El Camaleón Golf Club at the Fairmont Mayakoba and the Grand Coral Riviera Maya Resort will be used for the championships.

These championships will be hosted by the Mexican Golf Federation (FMG). The 27th women’s championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy and the 30th men’s championship for the Eisenhower Trophy will be played in September 2016.

Mexico previously served as the host of the 1966 World Amateur Team Championships for the men’s competition at Club de Golf Mexico and for the women’s competition at Mexico City Country Club, both in Mexico City.

Usher to perform at Moon Palace

Palace Resorts will present Usher, seven-time Grammy Award-winning singer, in concert at the Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort in Cancun on Dec. 29.

Seating for the Usher concert includes three sections: reserved seating in Gold ($150), Platinum ($300) and Diamond ($350).

Guests booking five or more nights by Dec. 28 at the Moon Palace or any of four other Palace Resorts’ properties in Cancun and Playa del Carmen will receive two free tickets at check-in.
