By: Anne Chalfant

The Maya ruin sites within a one- to two-hour drive from Riviera Maya include Chichén Itzá, Tulum, Cobá and Muyil.

Here's a rundown:

Chichén Itzá: Arrive early to avoid large crowds. Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday; admission, $10; video camera fee is $3.50; tour guide costs $50-$60 per group. Note: El Castillo pyramid can no longer be climbed. There is likely to be a Dec. 21 event at Chichén Itzá; keep checking www.rivieramaya.com for an announcement, details.

Cobá: Open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily; admission, $4. Rent a bike or a bicycle taxi for $3-$5, or walk 1.2 miles on flat ground to various ruins, including Nohoch Mul pyramid, which can be climbed. Paths can be tricky to follow; hire a guide ($50 for group).

Tulum Archeological Zone: Tulum is interesting for its stunning overlook of the Caribbean, its sea wall and its temple, El Castillo. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission, $5.
Muyil: Only a few excavated ruins, but with a guided tour, visit a temple across a lagoon in Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. Birding, fly fishing, kayaking. Tours Monday-Saturday. www.siankaantours.org; e-mail info@siankaantours.org.
